Alcoa Power Generating Inc., Yadkin Division
Badin Works
Alcoa began producing aluminum at its Badin Works, a primary aluminum smelter, in August 1917. Until recently, electricity generated at the Yadkin Project was used to support the electric power needs of Badin Works. Aluminum production at Badin was temporarily curtailed by Alcoa in August 2002, as part of a series of business decisions made by Alcoa to continue its long-term, low cost production strategy within the context of a weak economy. Today, the plant manufactures anodes and high-purity aluminum. Should Alcoa decide to restart its aluminum production operations in Badin in the future, electricity generated at the Project will again be used to support those operations. In the interim, electricity generated at the Project is used by Alcoa to support its other aluminum operations or is sold on the open market.
