Play It Safe on the Lakes Alcoa-Yadkin encourages recreational lake users to “play it safe on the lakes” by always wearing a life jacket. Nearly 20 people have drowned on the Yadkin lakes since 2000 — including young children at public swimming areas and experienced fisherman and boaters. One of the most recent tragedies involved Anthony Zanolli, a 35-year-old Mooresville resident who drowned at High Rock Lake in 2004 when his fishing boat capsized in rough waters. He was not wearing a life jacket. Anthony’s widow, Patricia Zanolli, agreed to share Anthony’s story in hopes of preventing similar tragedies. “I know Anthony would want others to learn from what happened to him. That’s why I wanted to tell his story and encourage people to wear a life jacket,” Mrs. Zanolli said. With the support of North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and local law enforcement agencies, Alcoa-Yadkin has launched a public awareness campaign that includes print and radio ads produced in both English and Spanish. You will find the print and radio ads to the right of this article. You are encouraged to review lake use rules posted at all lake access points and to obey all applicable local, state and federal laws. Lake use rules include information on lake signage, water safety and guidelines for lake enjoyment. Water Safety Tips
